Grand Central covers 48 acres (19 ha) and has 44 platforms, more than any other railroad station in the world. Its platforms, all below ground, serve 30 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower. In total, there are 67 tracks, including a rail yard and sidings; of these, 43 tracks are in use for passenger service, while the remaining two dozen are used to store trains.

I wouldn’t draw too many conclusions from a single, unique data point.

@Brad Koehn ☑️ What conclusion are you referring to? Penn Station also in New York City follows the same design, tracks and platforms are out of the way, one level below the main hall which feel like a mall.

@Brad Koehn ☑️ The USA is not a railroad country. Trains still run on diesel, there is no country wide high speed network. And no, the long distance is no argument. Just have got a look at China. The longest service distance in the Chinese network is 2,760 km (1,710 mi). And the train does this in 10 1/2 hours. This is longer than the distance between New York and Dallas.

On the short term it is cheaper to just build airports, but on longer term the railroad would be helpful.
