Je lisais ce bouquin dans le métro, et pendant les 20 minutes du trajet, j'étais totalement immergé dans la Rome impériale... au risque de louper ma station !

Marguerite Yourcenar indicated in her notebooks of "Mémoires d'Hadrien" that a quotation from Gustave Flaubert's correspondence was at the origin of her desire to rewrite this book:

"The gods no longer being and Christ not yet being, there was, from Cicero to Marcus Aurelius, a unique moment when man alone was4. »

This intrigued her because she saw a parallel between that time and the post-war world. She also says she hesitated for a moment between the memories of the Roman emperor Hadrian and those of the poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam. In fact Hadrian, Omar Khayyam or the hero Zeno of The Abyss present themselves as lucid, tolerant and disillusioned characters, both on the human condition and on the illusions that humanity seems unable to do without.

i read as well The Abyss and was very impressed by the story about the siege of the city of Münster and "munzerism" (dissent from Anabaptism)

    Thanks for the info...
There are so many parallels and so many in search of the truth, but no one has ever found them...
